\"\"<\/a><\/figure><\/div>[\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_custom_heading text=”Colour Grid Series (1973)” use_theme_fonts=”yes” css=”” font_size=”16″ text_align=”left” font_weight=”600″][vc_column_text]The images in the Colour Grid Series were created using the Sicograph, a device developed in 1973 for medical use and one of the first Sicographs capable of digitally analysing X-ray images, converting them into colour and printing them.<\/p>\n

Instead of X-ray images, however, random patterns were fed into the system via punch cards and altered, using image-processing techniques such as smoothing contours, merging points into areas, or reducing colour values. The changes were visible in real time on a monitor.<\/p>\n

The output was produced by a precursor to today\u2019s inkjet plotters, which applied liquid ink through nozzles onto paper stretched over a rotating drum, scanning it line by line, with the ink intensity controlled electronically.<\/p>\n

The characteristic colour scheme resulted from using only the three primary colours \u2013 red, green and blue \u2013 without black.<\/p>\n
