Works from 1978-79
The first artworks by Em, created at the end of 1977 using advanced graphics software on an E&S framebuffer at JPL’s Graphics Lab, emerged within a rapidly developing computational environment. By September 1979, these systems had advanced significantly, making it possible to construct increasingly complex three-dimensional virtual worlds on screen, including techniques such as texture mapping and matrix transformations. Within this technical context, Em was able to create images such as Transjovian Pipeline, demonstrating what was then technically possible with framebuffer-based image generation—an image that would become a widely reproduced example of digital art throughout the 1980s.
