Rotations/Projections (1974)
In addition to the 16 mm films Rotations and Projections, which were created using an early 3D programme for the real-time representation of spatial movements, Franke also produced a small number of static images, which he later referred to as Cluster.
Like the films, these were generated using an interactive graphical display from the Siemens research laboratory in Munich and a digital computing unit. The system allowed for interventions in the process, for example regarding parameters such as the number of images, angle of view or speed; movements could also be paused at any time and captured as a single frame.
Unlike the film sequences calculated in real time, the Clusters were not subject to any time constraints. This enabled the creation of significantly more complex, densely structured image forms.
